Handling Your Sexuality: A Conscious Decision

No doubt, it is clear now, whether you knew this before now or not, that when a man or a woman leaves his or her partner to engage in sexual relationship with another person order than his or her partner; or engages in any form of sexual immorality, it is a sin

punishable before God. Such a person is in bondage and needs help quickly if his or her relationship would be snatched from the jaws of death, married or no.

If this is not quickly nipped in the bud, things could get out of hand in your life. You need to be in charge of your sexuality, and not let it drive you or rule over your life.

To this end therefore, there are a number of steps you need to take to handle your sexuality which I’ll be sharing with you here in the coming weeks. In today’s post however, we shall be considering one: a conscious decision.

It is important to note that the responsibility lies with you to make a conscious decision not to sin against God sexually. It is very like Daniel did during his time (Daniel 1:8). The food they were served were the very same delicacies the king ate. Now, we know that a king’s food is usually always rich. It has to be. Take a moment to imagine the dainty dishes spread out before him.

But Daniel decided he would not let a single morsel of that dainty dish down his throat, no matter how enticing, no matter how appetising, no matter how sweet the aroma of it was, no matter how garnished it may look.

This is how Satan presents sin to us, including (especially, if you would indulge me) sexual sin. You should be familiar with the cliché “five minutes’ pleasure”. Well, it could be more or less than five minutes; but the end result is always the same: what starts off as pleasurable, sweet, leaves one with the bitter taste of regret eventually; yes, bowels of regret.

You must therefore, like Daniel, consciously decide you will never engage in this sin. You'd need to close your eyes to it, consciously and intentionally, giving the devil no room to suggest things to your spirit. Someone before you has done it long ago. A while ago, we looked at Job 31. I like it better in the Amplified (Classic Edition) Bible. Here, Job declares:

I dictated a covenant (an agreement) to my eyes; how then could I look (lustfully) upon a girl?

For what portion should I have from God above [if I were lewd], and what heritage from the Almighty on high?

Does not calamity [justly] befall the unrighteous, and disaster the workers of iniquity?

Does not [God] see my ways and count all my steps? (Job 31:1-4).

Doesn’t this remind you of the words of Joseph to the wife of his master Portipher who wanted to have sex with him at all cost? The Book of Genesis 39 tells us that she kept pressing him day by day.

But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household. No one here has more authority than I do! He has held back nothing from me, except you, because you are his wife. How could I ever do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God” (Verses 8-9, New living Translation).

When you read on, in case you do not know the story, you would see that he eventually one day ran out of the house, leaving his clothes in her hands. Obviously, the crazy woman had grabbed him out of senseless desperation; but he had already made that conscious decision; that is, his mind was already made up not to mess up in this way.

This brings us to the next step you must take, but I’ll save that for the next post. Do keep in touch, and share your thoughts in the comments section below. God bless.
